Overview
Amazing mix of old school and tactical shooting. Story is corny and cheesy, but the characters add so much charm. It definitely reminds me of DOOM 2016, and in a way I can say it’s the “grand-daddy” of the return of old-school shooters. Funny how history repeats itself.
Story & Characters
Now whilst I can’t take the story seriously due to how absurd the moments are, the CHARACTERS are SO engaging. I love the concept of one of your previous teammates being a Nazi, but due to the Nazis killing his child because they had a disability, it caused him to convert. Max Haus (a disabled adult), is someone that this character deeply cares for and protects, in a way becoming a strong father figure for him. There’s plenty of great character moments like that within the game. The characters are amazing.
One thing I hate is BJ’s plot armour. OH MY GOODNESS. While he is a Nazi-killing badass, the amount of times he escapes situations by the skin of his teeth just makes him seem VERY LUCKY as opposed to being a competent former army member. The story is honestly like…”yeah we know this is ridiculous, but we got hype moments and aura”, and honestly they do got hype moments and aura. I just wish BJ escaped more situations due to his competence rather than sheer willpower and luck.
Gameplay & Presentation
The gameplay is virtually again perfect. It’s not completely old-school. There is reloading, at times there is cover-based shooting, there’s sprinting etc., however the old school elements like running down hallways and just spraying, and the old-school level design and weapon roster mix great with this. I actually have no complaints when it comes to core gameplay (APART from losing all your weapons when you go into another level). The art direction is beautiful, and the game is so technically impressive in terms of performance and graphical fidelity.
Final Verdict
I love this game. It’s so good.
